Communications services companies rose sharply after strong earnings in the sector.

T-Mobile US shares rose after the carrier said its Sprint acquisition allowed it to save on tower technology as it rolls out its 5G network nationwide, boosting subscriber growth that outpaced that of its larger rivals, AT&T and Verizon again in the fourth quarter.

Vodafone Group shares rose after the British carrier posted fourth-quarter revenue growth in line with Wall Street targets.
