Shares of retailers and other consumer companies rose, but not by as much as the broad market, as traders rotated back into value sectors.

The consumer discretionary sector has come to be associated with "growth" sectors, for whom economic overheating and inflation is a particular risk. On sessions like Monday, when investors are positioning for an acceleration in growth and inflation, consumer sectors tend to lag materials, industrials and financial sectors.

Poultry giant Sanderson Farms is exploring a sale as it seeks to capitalize on growing demand for chicken products, The Wall Street Journal reported.
