Consumer companies rose after strong consumer-spending data.

U.S. personal spending rose 0.7% in December, according to the Commerce Department. One strategist said the rate of income growth is lagging that of spending, which heightens the stakes for January jobs data due next week.

"Economic data in terms of employment data is extremely important for the market to assess how the economy is, and whether consumer spending can continue at this clip," said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at brokerage LPL Financial.

JetBlue Airways warned it could terminate its attempted takeover of Spirit Airlines next week after a federal judge's ruling blocked their planned merger.

Colgate-Palmolive posted better-than-expected sales in the fourth quarter, led by sales growth in its Latin America division.
