At the EU-Cuba Joint Council, High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell had a fruitful discussion with Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodriguez on overall EU-Cuba relations. This included taking stock of dialogues under the EU-Cuba Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement (PDCA) and future cooperation in the years ahead.

In particular, they discussed the impact of US sanctions on the Cuban economy and on EU trade and investment interests.

In this context, the HR/VP strongly rejected the last minute inclusion of Cuba in the US list of state sponsors of terrorism by the outgoing Administration. He regretted that this decision will have a negative impact on foreign direct investment in Cuba and will further aggravate the already difficult situation of the Cuban people in the midst of the pandemic. The EU stands as ever ready to support Cuba in reform efforts in the interest of all.
