EVOLUTION OF TURNOVER OF ENTERPRISES IN

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD SERVICE ACTIVITIES

NOVEMBER 2020

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) with this ad hoc sectoral publication, presents the map with the evolution of the turnover of enterprises classified in the Accommodation and Food and Beverage Service Activities divisions. These economic activities have been over time in the focus of interest due to the significant weight they bear on the Greek economy as a whole, but also due to their extensive dispersion, with a significant presence in all regional units and a significant contribution to the respective local economies of Greece, often associated with the tourist product of the country. At the same time, under the recent circumstances, the monitoring and dedicated publication of the evolution of these economic activities has become imperative, given the direct and indirect adverse impact they have been subjected to, due to the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The current publication is part of the ad hoc Press Releases series published by ELSTAT (PR link), since April 2020, incorporating the most recent data on turnover from Administrative Sources for November 2020.

Similar publications have been planned and are released on a monthly basis, throughout the whole period during which the regular monitoring of the evolution of the turnover of enterprises providing Accommodation, Food and Beverage Service Activities remains relevant and warranted.

In particular, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announces data on a monthly and quarterly basis and at the regional unit country-level of analysis, for the turnover of enterprises classified in the divisions Accommodation, Food and Beverage Service Activities (divisions 55 and 56 of the NACE Rev.2 classification) for the period 2019-2020.

The published data can highlight, at a detailed local level, the current evolution in the performance of enterprises having activity in key classes of the tourism sector and thus provide quick and highly relevant information on the evolution of the tourist product of Greece.

Specifically,

For the total of enterprises in Accommodation Activities, the turnover in the third quarter 2020 amounted to 1,558,171,593 euro, recording a decrease of 61.4% in comparison with the third quarter 2019, when the respective turnover was 4,034,094,834 euro. The largest decrease in the turnover of the third quarter 2020 compared to the third quarter of 2019 was recorded in the Regional Unit Karpathos (84.5%) and the smallest decrease (4.2%) was recorded in the Regional Unit Grevena, while an increase (0.6%) was recorded in the Regional Unit Florina (Table 2a).

For the total of enterprises in Food and Beverage Service Activities, the turnover in the third quarter 2020 amounted to 1,580,633,291 euro, recording a decrease of 31.2% in comparison with the third quarter 2019, when the respective turnover was 2,298,824,542 euro. The largest decrease in the turnover of the third quarter 2020 compared to the third quarter of 2019 was recorded in the Regional Unit Karpathos (69.5%), while the respective smallest decrease (0.8%) was recorded in the Regional Unit Serres (Table 3a).

For the enterprises in Accommodation Activities obliged to double-entrybookkeeping, for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in November 2020 amounted to 42,228,657 euro, recording a decrease of 63.1% in comparison with November 2019, when the respective turnover was 114,592,623 euro. For the enterprises of the Regional Units with a contribution to the total turnover of the year 2019 greater than 0.5% (Table 1), the largest decrease in the turnover in November 2020 compared with November 2019 was recorded in the Regional Unit Thessaloniki (83,8%) and the smallest decrease (19.8%) was recorded in the Regional Unit Chalkidiki, while respective increase (8.4%) was recorded in the Regional Unit Kos (Table 2b).

For the enterprises in Food and Beverage Service Activities obliged to double-entry bookkeeping, for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in November 2020 amounted to 56,080,717 euro, recording a decrease of 53.4% in comparison with November 2019, when the respective turnover was 120,232,839 euro. For the enterprises of the Regional Units with a contribution to the total turnover of the year 2019 greater than 0.5%, the largest decrease in the turnover in November 2020 compared with November 2019 was recorded in the Regional Unit Thira (93.2%) and the smallest decrease (9.2%) was recorded in the Regional Unit Imathia, while respective increase (54.4%) was recorded in the Regional Unit Evia (Table 3b).
