The FTSE 100 bluechip index closed Thursday in the red, down 0.6% to 7879, amid a mixed afternoon for global equities on the back of a broad-based weakness in several sectors, IG Group PLC chief market analyst Chris Beauchamp says in a note. "Rio Tinto's ex-dividend status has not helped mining stocks, with others like Antofagasta down in sympathy despite a better showing for commodity prices in general," he adds. The steam-system engineering company Spirax-Sarco was the top faller, down 5%, after it reported lower annual pretax profit, followed by the packaging company DS Smith, down 4.75%. Aviva and Informa lead a short list of risers, up 2.7% and 2.6% respectively after reporting positive annual results.

MARKET TALK:

WANdisco's Potential Fraud Looks Like a Nightmare

1337 GMT - WANdisco's dreams have gone up in smoke after it uncovered a potential fraud by a senior sales employee, AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould says in a research note. The software company has been shouting from the rooftops about significant revenue growth thanks to contracts wins, Mould says, and to go from aspirations of a U.S. stock market listing--announced on March 6--to shares being suspended in less than a week is a total embarrassment. "The idea that someone in the company has potentially been fiddling the books is a nightmare for management and shareholders," he says. References to significant going concern issues is even more shocking suggesting it needs a cash injection to keep going, Mould says, adding that a heavily discounted fundraising now seems its only option.
