08/24/2021 | 10:44am EDT

The FTSE 100 closed 0.2% up on Tuesday, with some gains for airlines as Covid-19 vaccines look set to receive approvals from various regulators. Rolls-Royce benefited from a buoyant airline sector and saw its shares reaching their best level in five months. Investor sentiment around the business is starting to become more positive as maintenance revenues start to show signs of picking up, Michael Hewson at CMC Markets said. Meanwhile, Sainsbury shares lost more than 5% in Tuesday's session after a 15% jump on Monday on speculation of a takeover bid by U.S. investors. The selloff came as traders took their profits on a somewhat speculative play, Joshua Mahony at IG said.
