FTSE 100 Rises Ahead of Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks

0802 GMT - The FTSE 100 rises 0.7% to 7524 points following gains in U.S. and Asia stocks as investors hope Russia and Ukraine reach a diplomatic solution in talks in Turkey on Tuesday. "The wave of guarded optimism on both Wall Street and Asia has washed through to U.K. shores in early trade, despite the ongoing travails which investors are facing," Interactive Investor says. "The boost in early exchanges continues the trend of the FTSE 100 as a relative outperformer, and the index remains ahead by 2% in the year to date." Insurer Prudential is the biggest riser while Barclays is the worst performer as the bank faces a GBP450 million loss for exceeding a U.S. limit on sales of structured products. Market Talk:

Oil Inches Higher With Ukraine Peace Talks Eyed

0829 GMT - Oil prices hover as investors monitor peace talks between Russia and Ukraine while demand concerns linger over lockdowns in China. Brent crude edges up 0.5% to $110.01 a barrel while WTI gains 0.4% to $106.41 a barrel. Ukraine and Russia are expected to resume peace talks in Istanbul Tuesday for the first time in two weeks. The war has tightened the oil market as Western nations have shunned Russian crude but negotiations are raising hopes that the conflict can be ended. Ukraine has indicated a willingness to become a neutral country. Covid-19 outbreaks in China are raising fears for demand however. "Markets are fearing the outbreak could ultimately put under threat the 15.5mb/d of oil the country consumes," ANZ Bank says. (william.horner@wsj.com)
