Shares of banks and other financial institutions fell slightly, giving back some recent gains as traders awaited more clarity on President Trump's policy goals.

Travelers shares rallied after the property-and-casualty insurer posted quarterly earnings ahead of the Wall Street target, reflecting higher premiums and policy sales. The firm warned the California fires would weigh on first-quarter earnings, but remained optimistic about 2025 growth, saying it was already reducing exposure to the Los Angeles region before the fires hit.
