Heads of Government of Lithuania and Sweden highlight COVID-19 and regional cooperation

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has had a remote meeting with Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Löfven, and has discussed fight against the pandemic, bilateral and regional cooperation, the importance of support to Belarus, and energy security.

'In the context of COVID-19, cooperation between the Baltic and Nordic countries is lively and effective. An example of this has been a joint letter from the countries of the whole region to the European Commission,' said Prime Minister Šimonytė.

The Prime Minister has emphasised that the issue of nuclear safety is highly important to Lithuania: Belarus has not implemented the nuclear safety recommendations approved by the EU; hence, the Astravets Nuclear Power Plant is unsafe and cannot operate.

Lithuania and Sweden are like-minded on supporting the Eastern Partners as well as assessing Russia's aggression and maintaining sanctions.

During the conversation, the Prime Minister has emphasised that bilateral relations have been developing in a very favourable manner. Sweden, together with other Nordic countries, remains Lithuania's most important partner in the Baltic Sea Region. For many years, Sweden has been Lithuania's largest investor and one of its main trading partners. Sweden is an important export market for goods and services for Lithuania's businesses.
