Health-care companies fell as investors grew concerned about the implications of a new round of coronavirus lockdowns for elective medical procedures.
Shares of hospital chains such as HCA and Tenet Healthcare fell. Drug giant Pfizer said it will ask health regulators to authorize its experimental Covid-19 vaccine within days, after reporting the shot was 95% effective in its pivotal study and showing signs of being safe.
Shares of Pfizer tested recent highs near $37, while its German partner, BioNTech, whose business fortunes are more closely tied to the vaccine's commercial potential, rose by more than 4%.
