Health-care companies fell, but not by as much as the broad market, as traders rotated into sectors with less to lose from another global wave of Covid 19.
Shares of vaccine makers Pfizer and BioNTech rose after President Biden emphasized the importance of vaccines in the coming fight against the Omicron variant.
Mr. Biden said the U.S. would require health insurers reimburse people who pay for rapid tests. Shares of Abbott Laboratories, which makes rapid Covid tests, rose slightly.
