Health-care companies rose as traders digested earnings in the sector.

GSK shares were higher after the British drug giant posted a sharp increase in fourth-quarter profit, fortified by higher demand for vaccines and specialty drugs.

Novartis shares declined after the Swiss drug maker said competition from generic drug makers weighed on its fourth-quarter profit. Novartis boosted its annual dividend payment.

Shares of Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk rose after it posted earnings ahead of Wall Street targets.
