ISPA Internet Services Providers' Association : Government needs to set out vision for tech and Internet policy – UK Internet industry

Posted on 15thJuly2016

In response to the government reshuffle that has seen the new Prime Minister create an expanded business department, ISPA, the voice of the UK Internet industry, has called on the new Government to ensure the digital economy is at the forefront of its priorities and new industrial strategy.

The Internet is the engine of the economy so we look forward to Government outlining a vision that puts the Internet, telecoms and digital services sectors at its heart, and to working with the new Secretaries of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Karen Bradley MP, and Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Rt Hon Greg Clark MP. As we navigate the post-Brexit environment, Government must listen to the calls from industry to ensure that there is access to talent and finance, along with the right regulatory framework in place to allow data sharing, the rollout of broadband and a fair liability regime to support the continued growth of the sector. The Internet industry is perfectly placed to show that the UK is innovative, open for business and ripe for export as we look for opportunities internationally.

Welcoming the new changes, ISPA Chair James Blessing said: 'The new Government has a great opportunity to continue to put the Internet and digital at the heart of its priorities and forthcoming Industrial Strategy. We call on the new Secretaries of State for Culture and Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy to recognise how essential the Internet industry is for the UK. ISPs stand ready to deliver in the post-Brexit environment, however Government needs to play its part by ensuring the internet industry is not held back by excessive regulation, are encouraged to invest and innovate and can access talent and finance'.
