Increased Demand for Liquid Assets Likely to Boost UK Treasury Bills Market

0927 GMT - Investors demand for near-cash assets also referred to as liquid assets is likely to support demand for U.K.'s Treasury bills, Barclay fixed-income strategist Moyeen Islam writes. "Higher demand for cash and near-money assets would likely raise structural demand for U.K. Treasury bills," he writes. The U.K. Debt Management Office plans to increase the stock of Treasury bills in issue by GBP5 billion over the fiscal year 2023-24 to GBP75 billion at the end of March 2024. "We have long seen a need to increase the bill stock to a higher level in order to address the imbalance between cash and collateral in the ultra-short end of the curve," Islam writes. Market Talk:

Flutter to See Limited Hit From UK Gambling Reform Proposals, US Primary Listing Possible

0933 GMT - Flutter Entertainment should only see a 1%-2% Ebitda hit from the U.K. government's gambling reform White Paper proposals, Jefferies analysts say in a research note, but the FTSE 100 gambling and betting group's secondary listing in the U.S. looks like a precursor to a primary U.S. listing. The chair-designate's heavyweight U.S. business credentials will add further credence to a primary listing, with a realistic prospect being mid-2024, they say, adding that its U.S. division is slated to transform from losses in 2022 to its largest division by Ebitda in 2026. First-quarter numbers next week should reconfirm strong U.S. market share trends and a robust performance excluding the U.S., they say. Jefferies has a buy rating on the stock with a target price of 18,000 pence. (kyle.morris@dowjones.com)

NatWest's 'Cautious' Outlook Drags UK Bank Stocks Lower

0917 GMT - The British banking sector is being weighed down by NatWest shares, which trade sharply lower despite posting a first-quarter profit beat. The lender's reiterated 2023 outlook "came across as unduly cautious at the time given the current base rate is at 4.25% and looks set to go higher in a couple of weeks' time, when the Bank of England gets set to meet again, which could push [net interest margin] higher," CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson says, noting that the reaction seems extreme even when taking the uncertain economic outlook into account. NatWest falls 6%. Peers Lloyds and Barclays fall around 3%, while HSBC and Standard Chartered are down around 1.5%. (elena.vardon@wsj.com)
