Shares of industrial and transportation companies rose amid signs that global trade remained on the rise despite the threat of renewed Covid-19 restrictions.

Danish shipping giant A.P. Moeller-Maersk late Monday boosted its 2021 forecast and announced strong preliminary second-quarter earnings after seeing a continued rebound in demand and surging freight rates.

Northrop Grumman continued the run of strong results by defense contractors, with forecast-beating quarterly profits and a higher full-year earnings forecast as it booked more deals for classified government programs.

The flight of Boeing's Starliner space capsule was postponed because of an issue with a component in the vehicle's propulsion system, the company and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said.
