Shares of industrial and transportation companies ticked down in volatile trading, as the shock of Russia's invasion of Ukraine continued to reverberate through global markets.

Defense contractors rallied after Germany divulged plans to boost spending on defense in response to Russia's military strike in Ukraine. Shares of German defense contractors Hensoldt and Rheinmetall rose sharply. Shares of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman each rose by more than 6%. Lockheed received a contract to provide technical and logistical support to Italy's Air Force C-130J aircraft fleet.

Toyota Motor said it would shut down all 14 of its factories in Japan on Tuesday after supplier Kojima Industries experienced a computer problem.
