Shares of industrial and transportation companies rose after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's speech left open the possibility that the Fed will extend its bond-buying program.

Mr. Powell reiterated that the Fed's plan is to begin tapering bond purchases by the end of the year, but he also noted that the plan is dependent on the state of the employment market.

Shares of Hong Kong conglomerate Citic added to substantial gains for the year to date after it posted a 64% increase in first-half profit to roughly $5.67 billion.

Trucking and logistics provider Schneider National Inc. is joining a rush to circumvent shipping bottlenecks by using chartered vessels to get containers stuffed with goods delivered to the U.S. in time for the holiday sales season.
