FTSE 100 Rises as Telecom Stocks Rally

The FTSE 100 rises 0.5% to 7256 points as telecoms stocks BT Group and Vodafone gain after Telecom Italia received a EUR10.8 billion takeover approach from U.S. fund KKR. "The offer signals a broader appeal to deep-pocketed U.S. private equity giants of the European telecoms sector and could provide much needed support to the Italian business which has struggled with two profit warnings this year," Interactive Investor analyst Victoria Scholar says. The FTSE 100 is attempting to recover from last week's losses, which were driven by weaker travel stocks and commodities, and its next major hurdle is 7,300 points, she says.

Hochschild Drops on Peruvian PM's Plans to Shut Its Mines

Shares in Hochschild fall 45% after the Peruvian head of cabinet said that the government will create a commission to negotiate the closure of mining projects, including the company's Pallancata and Inmaculada mines. RBC Capital Markets expected the market to react negatively, given the unexpected and uncertain legal nature of the action. Inmaculada and Pallancata account for 79% of the Hochschild's valuation, RBC estimates. "We are not sure if the magnitude of what this sort of action might mean for Peruvian foreign investment has been fully appreciated by the government, which we think could provide potential for a reversal in due course," RBC says. The bank expects the news to weigh on other Peru-exposed miners and on the country's currency as well.
