Producers of metals and other raw materials producers rose, but not by as much as the broad market, as commodity prices continued to retreat.

Silver futures closed at their lowest in about two years, amid concerns a recession would slow industrial usage of the precious metal.

Copper futures fell by 3% for the week.

Miner Nevada Copper said it's in default of certain financing and contractual obligations as it has discussions with financing partners to continue its operations.

The eurozone's annual rate of inflation accelerated to a fresh record high in June, increasing the pressure on policy makers at the European Central Bank to move more aggressively.

Alcoa said it would begin to shut down one of its smelting lines at an Indiana plant because of operational challenges.
