Producers of metals and other raw materials ticked up ahead of inflation data later in the week.
There's been a clear softening in labor-market data of late, which bodes well for a continuation of inflation easing, but also raises alarms about the economic-growth outlook, said one strategist. "We're in the camp that things are slowing but we can't call it a recession at this point," said J.D. Joyce, president of Houston financial advisory Joyce Wealth Management.
Shares of specialized glassmaker Corning rallied after it boosted earnings projections for the latest quarter, due to adoption of its optical connectivity products for generative artificial-intelligence applications.
