Producers of metals and other raw materials rose as traders rotated back into the "reflation" trade, anticipating higher commodity prices due to a rapid economic rebound.

For much of the first half of the year, investors were seeking out the materials sector and others that thrive when economic growth and inflation are picking up. Faith in that trade wobbled earlier this week.

Still, inflationary harbingers copper and gold both eked out gains on the week.

German chemicals processor BASF said earnings and sales for the second quarter surged amid higher prices and volumes, according to preliminary figures, prompting the company to raise its targets for the year.
