McDonald's to reopen in Ukraine

08/11/2022 | 11:10am EDT

STORY: McDonald's plans to reopen its restaurants in Ukraine over the next few months.

The fast food giant said Thursday (August 11) the decision was made after 'extensive discussions' with Ukrainian officials and employees.

The world's biggest burger chain closed all its outlets in the country in March after Moscow sent troops into its neighbour.

McDonald's had 109 restaurants in Ukraine, but did not say how many it planned to reopen.

The firm said it was working with suppliers to get products to restaurants.

It also announced it would also bring employees back on site with stronger safety protocols.

Re-openings will begin in Kyiv and western Ukraine - areas largely shielded from the most intense fighting.

KFC- and Pizza Hut-owner Yum Brands said earlier this month that nearly all of its stores in the country had reopened.
