(Bqp.vn) - Minister of National Defence Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang held phone talks with his Canadian counterpart Harjit Singh Sajjan on May 6.

At the phone talks, the both sides reviewed the results of the Vietnam - Canada diplomatic relation since it was established in 1973 in various fields, including defence cooperation. Accordingly, the bilateral defence cooperation has been growing effectively and the two sides have implemented a Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defence cooperation, and achieved positive results in areas, such as training, peacekeeping operations as well as maritime security.
Mr. Harjit Singh Sajjan congratulated Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang on his appointment as defence minister, and appreciated the country's role in ASEAN, as well as the ASEAN's role in leading and fostering the establishment of multilateral security cooperation mechanisms, especially the ADMM Plus.
For his part, Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang thanked Mr. Harjit Singh Sajjan for his positive assessment of the relationship between the two countries and the two armies, and shared the difficulties that Canada is facing during the Covid-19 pandemic. He also praised Canada's role in the region and the world, and affirmed that Vietnam always wants to enhance relations with Canada on the basis of equality and mutual benefits.
In the coming time, the both sides agreed to continue implementing bilateral defence cooperation in existing areas, in which focusing on delegation exchange, dialogue, consultation, training, defence industry, peacekeeping operations, marine security, etc.
