Serbian citizens and banks to exchange eighth-series francs until 31 May 2021

On 28 April 2021, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) announced it would recall the eighth-series franc banknotes as of 30 April 2021.

Given the short period from the announcement date (28 April 2021) until the recall date (30 April 2021), the NBS enables citizens to exchange eighth-series francs with Serbian banks free of charge, and banks to exchange these banknotes with the NBS, also free of charge until 31 May 2021.

The NBS made this decision knowing that some citizens have still not exchanged/sold these banknotes. This way, citizens will be able to deposit eighth-series banknotes to their FX bank accounts, sell or exchange them for ninth-series banknotes with banks and licensed exchange dealers free of charge.

After the eighth-series francs are recalled on 30 April 2021, banks in Serbia can but are not obliged to exchange/purchase them, and licensed exchange dealers in Serbia can but are not obliged to purchase them, and in case they are doing so, they will define the exchange/purchase conditions at their discretion.

Citizens are recommended to place eighth-series francs in their FX accounts, sell them for dinars or exchange them for ninth-series banknotes as soon as possible given that banks will need time to deliver these banknotes to the NBS. This means banks and licensed exchange dealers will stop receiving these banknotes even before 31 May, on which they will decide on their own.
After their recall, the eighth-series franc banknotes and earlier recalled sixth-series banknotes can be exchanged, for an unlimited period of time, at the SNB counters in Berne and Zurich or at SNB agencies in major Swiss cities. The recalled banknotes can also be sent to the SNB by post - their countervalue will be transferred to one's bank or postal account.
