Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki repeated his concerns about the yen's sharp depreciation and indicated that the government is ready to intervene in currency markets again.

"We cannot tolerate excessive moves caused by speculation" in the yen, Mr. Suzuki told reporters in Washington DC on Wednesday. "We will take appropriate action if there are any excessive moves."

Westinghouse Deal Latest Signal of a Nuclear Power Revival

A deal by Brookfield Renewable Partners and Cameco Corp. to buy nuclear-services firm Westinghouse Electric Co. is the latest sign of revival in the nuclear-power industry after years of decline.

The matchup would create something of a Western nuclear powerhouse, pairing a key nuclear-power service provider with the largest publicly traded uranium company and one of the world's biggest owners of wind and solar projects. The transaction is a bet that nuclear will play an important role in the energy transition away from fossil fuels. Brookfield and Cameco announced the deal Tuesday, saying the total enterprise value for Westinghouse is roughly $7.88 billion.

German Inflation Confirmed at Highest Level in More Than 70 Years -- Update

Germany's annual rate of inflation accelerated again in September, posting the highest reading since December 1951 as temporary government interventions to ease prices expired, according to final data released by German statistics office Destatis on Thursday.

The consumer price index--a measure of what consumers pay for goods and services--rose 10.0% in September compared with the same month a year ago measured by national standards, up from 7.9% in August, confirming the preliminary reading. This is in line with the forecasts of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal.

Russia Launches Drone Strikes Across Ukraine

Russia carried out a drone attack in the Kyiv region and Ukraine said it shot down several aerial vehicles in the south, following days of strikes that have galvanized Western support for fortifying Ukraine's air defenses.

The head of the Kyiv region's military administration, Oleksiy Kuleba, said rescue workers were at the site of the attack, without specifying where or what had been targeted. Early indications were that suicide drones had been deployed, he said.

U.N. Overwhelmingly Condemns Russian Move to Annex Ukrainian Regions

United Nations members overwhelmingly rejected Moscow's move to annex four regions of Ukraine, dealing a symbolic blow to President Vladimir Putin and putting 143 nations on the record as not recognizing Russia's latest territorial expansion.

Still, 35 U.N. members abstained from the vote, showing the limits of lobbying by the U.S. and other Western countries that sought to convince developing economies to reject Russia's moves and isolate Moscow diplomatically. China, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam were among the countries abstaining from the vote.

North Korea's Kim Guides Missile Test in Latest Show of Military Might

SEOUL-North Korean leader Kim Jong Un guided the launch of two long-range strategic cruise missiles on Wednesday, state media said, claiming the weapons were equipped to carry tactical nukes.

Mr. Kim stressed that the test was a "clear warning to the enemies," demonstrating the combat capacity of North Korea's war deterrent, according to a Thursday state media report.

U.S. Sees 'Decisive Decade' Ahead in Competition With China, Russia

WASHINGTON-The U.S. is entering a "decisive decade" as it faces competition with China and an attempt by Russia to upend the international order, while dealing with challenges from climate change to energy to food security, international terrorism and disease, the White House said Wednesday.

The Biden administration released its national-security strategy, a blueprint that outlines the administration's approach to problems around the world.

Trump's State of Mind to Be Focus of Jan. 6 Committee Hearing

WASHINGTON-The House select committee investigating the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, will focus its hearing Thursday on former President Donald Trump's state of mind as the panel begins to make its closing argument that he orchestrated a wide-ranging attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election, committee aides said.

Since its most recent hearing in late July, the panel has received thousands of documents from the Secret Service and interviewed new witnesses, including several members of Mr. Trump's cabinet. Documentary evidence will include information from hundreds of thousands of pages the Secret Service presented to the committee after it subpoenaed the agency in July, according to committee aides.

Asylum-Seeking Venezuelan Migrants Who Cross Border Illegally to Be Returned to Mexico

WASHINGTON-Venezuelan migrants who cross the U.S.'s southern border illegally to seek asylum will be expelled back to Mexico using a pandemic-era border policy known as Title 42, under a new migration agreement announced jointly by the U.S. and Mexico on Wednesday.

At the same time, the Biden administration also is creating a new immigration program to allow up to 24,000 Venezuelans to move to the U.S. legally, to deter them from attempting to cross into the U.S. illegally, the announcement said.
