Fortis unit Central Hudson Gas & Electric, which operates in New York state, has been criticized this winter by elected officials over electricity bills. This week's developments include Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan calling for a state regulator to investigate billing practices and price surges. He cited issues including "the failed implementation" of a new billing system and "unexpected and unprecedented bill surges." Central Hudson said Tuesday that "energy supply prices, which are market-based and which Central Hudson does not mark-up nor profit on, have risen" reflecting factors including weather, global events and strong demand. It noted that "market analysts now predict higher costs will be sustained through much of 2022, particularly in light of events in eastern Europe."
