Omicron Could Make UK, Eurozone GDP Contract in 1Q if Full Lockdowsn Are Required
0839 GMT - Omicron poses a major downside risk to Berenberg's economic outlook for the U.K. and the eurozone in early 2022, Berenberg's economists say. Even if Omicron is less lethal than earlier variants and booster shots reduce the medical risks further, a rapid spread of the virus variant could still overburden health systems, economists at Berenberg warn. If the U.K. and major parts of the eurozone had to impose Dutch-style lockdowns throughout January, real GDP may decline in both regions in the first quarter by around 1% quarter-on-quarter instead of expanding slightly, as Berenberg currently expects. Third Shot of AstraZeneca Covid Vaccine Boosts Protection Against Omicron, Lab Studies Show
0845 GMT - A third shot of the Covid-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca PLC and the University of Oxford is shown to boost protection against the highly transmissible Omicron variant, according to a pair of laboratory studies from researchers at the University of Washington and Oxford. But the studies, which haven't been peer-reviewed and won't necessarily reflect real-world effectiveness, add to widespread evidence that Omicron is better than previous variants at partially evading protection afforded by vaccines. The Oxford study examined blood samples from 41 people who had received two AstraZeneca shots followed by a booster. It found immune protection from Omicron one month after the booster to be broadly similar to protection measured against the previously dominant Delta variant one month after a second AstraZeneca dose. AstraZeneca and Oxford researchers say the findings support use of the vaccine as a booster. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
