Research and Markets: Sludge to Energy - Biogas Generation and Utilization: Technology Trends and Market Potential

08/07/2014 | 11:09am EDT

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/mjsgt4/sludge_to_energy) has announced the addition of the "Sludge to Energy - Biogas Generation and Utilization: Technology Trends and Market Potential" report to their offering.

Pre-treatment is key to unlocking additional energy in biogas to energy facilities. Thermal hydrolysis dominates the sludge pre-treatment market with anaerobic digestion being the dominant sludge to energy technology.

This report entitled Sludge to Energy - Biogas Generation and Utilization: Technology Trends and Market Potential' focuses on the sludge to energy area. The report highlights that tightening regulations relating to biosolids application to land, sludge disposal to landfill, and sludge incineration are driving energy and resource recovery in the wastewater treatment (WWT) industry. Sludge treatment and disposal costs can represent up to 50% of the operational expenditure, resulting in a substantial economic driver towards finding more inexpensive long-term disposal routes. Sludge pre-treatment technologies offer several advantages in WWT. These technologies can reduce sludge management costs through increasing sludge digestibility, dewaterability, and decreasing sludge volumes.

Also as pre-treatment technologies break open the cell walls and unlock additional energy, they result in an increase in energy production. In the US there are currently 1,238 WWT plants (greater than 1 MGD), which digest their sludge. 22% of these plants utilise their biogas using combined heat and power (CHP) units. Cambi thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment technology is installed in only one US plant presently, with an installed capacity of 149,000 tDS/yr. There is an opportunity for Cambi to grow into the sludge pre-treatment market in the US. If the Cambi THP technology is installed in 2/3 of the 22% of plants which currently utilise their biogas in CHP units, then their market share would increase 11 fold which is significant.

This report outlines several key takeaways, which summarize the dominant report findings as follows. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the predominant sludge to energy technology, while the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) controls the CHP market, and Cambi's thermal hydrolysis technology is dominating the sludge pre-treatment market within the WWT industry. The report also emphasizes that in an environment of rising sludge disposal costs, increasing energy costs, and tightening regulations, pre-treatment can offer a feasible solution to solve these issues.

Key Topics Covered:

1 Introduction

2 Technology Trends

2.1 Biogas Cleaning and Upgrading

2.2 Biogas to Energy Technologies

2.3 Pre-treatment Technologies

2.4 Co-Digestion

2.5 Recent Innovations in Sludge to Biogas

3 Market Trends

3.1 Market Estimates

3.2 Market Barriers

3.3 Market Drivers

3.4 Market Activity

4 Key Takeaways

4.1 Anaerobic digestion is the predominant Sludge to Energy' technology on the market

4.2 ICE dominates the CHP market; however, underutilization of biogas at smaller WWTPs and tightening air regulations could change this

4.3 Pre-treatment is key to unlocking additional energy in biogas to energy facilities

4.4 Co-digestion sounds like a good idea in theory, but can be problematic in practice

4.5 CHP optimum is an option when electricity prices are high, while direct gas grid injection optimum is an option when natural gas prices are high
