Sterling Falls After Weak UK PMI Data

1001 GMT - Sterling falls after data showed a key measure of U.K. manufacturing and services activity contracted by more than expected in January. The S&P Global/CIPS U.K. composite purchasing managers' index fell to a 24-month low of 47.8 in January from 49.0 in December with a level below 50 signalling a contraction. Economists in a WSJ survey expected a reading of 48.5. "Weaker-than-expected PMI numbers in January underscore the risk of the U.K. slipping into recession," S&P economist Chris Williamson says in the survey's press release. GBP/USD falls to 1.2340 after the data from 1.2381 beforehand and EUR/GBP rises to 0.8807 from 0.8782. (renae.dyer@wsj.com)
