Higher unemployment than a year ago
The number of unemployed persons (53,000) in the 3rd quarter of 2020 was about the same as in the previous quarter, while compared to the previous year it was higher by 7.7%.The unemployment rate (5.1%) in the 3rd quarter of 2020 was about the same as in the previous quarter. Compared to the same period of 2019, the rate increased by 0.4 percentage points. In the 3rd quarter of 2020, it was 4.4% among men and 5.9% among women. Among the 53,000 unemployed persons, 56% were unemployed also in the 2nd quarter of 2020, 20% were employed and 24% were inactive.

More student workers and fewer self-employed in 3rd quarter 2020
The employment rate in the 3rd quarter of 2020 was higher by 0.5% than in the previous quarter. It was 54.9%. Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2019, the rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points.

The number of employed persons (979,000) in the 3rd quarter of 2020 increased by 1% compared to the previous quarter. It was higher both for men and for women. Among employed persons, the number of student workers increased the most, by 107% (or 13,000 more compared to the previous quarter), followed by the number of employees with employment contracts, by 1% (or 9,000 more), On the other hand, the number of self-employed persons decreased by more than 8% (approximately 10,000). Compared to the same period of 2019, the number of self-employed persons decreased by 12%.

Leave of absence
Fewer than 20% of the 859,000 employees were absent from work in the 3rd quarter of 2020. Those were off from the work but still employed. Depending on the reason why they did not perform work, 70% were on a leave, 14% were on sick leave and only 4% were on temporary lay-off. In the 2nd quarter of 2020, 47% of absent employees were on temporary lay-off (80,000 of employees), while 10% of employees were not working due to paid leave (e.g. for vacations).

In information and communication activities 20% more employees compared to the previous year
After the lockdown in the 2nd quarter of 2020, the health and social measures to reduce transmission of COVID-19 were eased in the 3rd quarter of 2020. In this period, we detected an increased number of employees in the area of information and communication activities as well as in catering. The number of persons employed in these areas increased by more than 16% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2020. In information and communication activities, the number of employed persons increased (20%) compared to the same period of the previous year, while in catering there were 4.5% fewer employed people.
