Tokyo government considered economic impact of travel exclusion - Kyodo

12/01/2020 | 11:23pm EST
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike attends a news conference, in Tokyo

TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo's decision to urge older Japanese to avoid visiting the capital under a government travel campaign, instead of excluding the city entirely, took into consideration the impact on the Japanese economy, Kyodo News reported, citing Governor Yuriko Koike.

"Since Tokyo's economy is extremely large and has a big ripple effect on the whole country, we agreed in cooperation with the national government," to make the request, the agency quoted Koike as saying.

Japan's cities of Osaka and Sapporo were excluded from the travel programme as coronavirus infections surged to record highs, and there had been speculation Tokyo could also be excluded.
