Shares in Toronto were marginally lower at midday as producer-manufacturing and technology stocks weighed in the session. Transcontinental Inc. joined the downward trend after the company missed expectations in its third quarter, while shares in Canadian National Railway Co. also fell after companies linked to Bill and Melinda Gates said they would sell a portion of their holdings in the company.

Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index was 0.27% lower at 20751.28, with the blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 Index also down by 0.21% to 1243.27.

Transcontinental Inc. shares were down mid-trading by 4.1% at C$23.41 after said third-quarter profit fell despite a rise in revenue amid short-term challenges in the period, and that it expects those challenges to continue to weigh in the fourth quarter.

Other market movers:

Canadian National Railway Co. shares fell 0.5% to C$154.81 after a number of investment companies linked to Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates, ex-wife Melinda Gates and their foundation jointly said they intend to sell shares in.

SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. shares rose 0.6% to C$36.70 on the news that its joint venture has been selected to provide on-call architecture-engineering services for Los Angeles International Airport and Van Nuys Airport in California.
