Canadian stocks were firmly higher Monday at midday, benefiting from gains in the energy and tech sectors. Meanwhile, producer manufacturing, health tech and retail sectors were the main laggards. Shares in Aris Gold Corp. were rose after the company said it had acquired a stake in a joint-venture gold project in Colombia for $100 million.

Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 0.81% at 21994.43, and the blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 rose 0.81% as well to 1331.26.

Aris Gold Corp. shares were 27% higher at C$1.90 after it announced the acquisition of a 20% joint-venture interest in the Soto Norte gold project from an Abu Dhabi-based investment company for $100 million and that it will become the joint venture's operator.


Other market movers:

Nova Cannabis Inc. shares rose 13% to C$2.61 after the company said sales nearly tripled and profits increased in the fourth quarter.
