TrackInsight: In 2020, the 20 best performing ETFs were all thematic ETFs

The potential for thematic ETF returns is significant, increasing investor interest and attention in this growing segment. If we exclude leveraged and currency ETFs of the best performing ETFs of the past year, the top 20 were all thematic and all delivered far in excess of 100% return. This new generation of thematic ETFs are shaking up the ETF industry and changing the game for investors. Indeed, in the 2021 TrackInsight Global ETF Survey, 52% of the panel of investors declared increasing their exposure in the next two to three years.

But what really are thematic ETFs ? Thematic ETFs follow new social, technological or economic themes that fall outside of traditional investment classifications, often targeting very specific niches.
