Shares of power producers fell, as traders rotated out of defensive sectors during a wild trading session.

Shares of utilities initially held up far better than the broad market during a flight from risk.

Late in the session, however, technology and small-cap indices, which were on the verge of bear-market territory staged a rally, and traders sold out of defensive stocks to scoop up cyclical peers.
