Shares of power producers fell, but not by as much as the broad market, as traders sought out sectors less sensitive to economic slowdowns.

"Where this market is is clearly on the defensive side of the equation," said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at brokerage LPL Financial. "It's back to utilities, back to health care, back to REITS, even though that part of the equation has gotten expensive."

Ukrainian officials are accusing Russia of obstructing the International Atomic Energy Agency mission to inspect the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which investigators visited on Thursday for the first time since the war began.

Electric company Xcel Energy told The Wall Street Journal it took control of about 22,000 Colorado customers' thermostats on a hot day this week, and wouldn't allow them to lower the temperature as part of an optional program.
