"A number of foreign groups have attacked and infiltrated into the system of Vietnam's large commercial banks to steal their clients' money," the ministry said in a statement at the weekend.

The statement said these groups scanned for security loopholes and illegally gained access to the banks' servers. Authorities did not specify the names of the affected banks or the amount of money stolen.

The State Bank of Vietnam, the country's central bank, didn't immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

"Further investigation is underway," the ministry said. It didn't provide further details about the arrested person or the groups suspected to be behind the attack.
