Producers of metals and other raw materials fell alongside gold and silver prices.
Shares of precious metals miners such as Pan American Silver and Newmont gave back some of their recent gains.
Silver futures plunged 9%, one of their biggest drops in recent years, but still finished the year with their largest gain since 1979.
