Producers of metals, grains and other raw materials rose as the U.S. dollar gave back some of its recent gains.
Gold futures rebounded, closing within 1.7% of all-time highs, at $5,229.70 a troy ounce.
Silver futures rose 6% to $89.08 an ounce.
Rio Tinto lined up nearly $1.2 billion to finance the development of a lithium project in Argentina, supporting its growth pipeline for the key ingredient in battery storage and electric vehicles.
