(Alliance News) - Carlo Messina has identified the revitalization of Mediobanca as a strategic objective of the exchange offer (OPAS) launched by Intesa Sanpaolo for Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena.
As reported by Il Messaggero on Tuesday, the CEO assured that the Milanese investment bank's brand, backed by 70 years of history, will be preserved and enhanced alongside its workforce, with the aim of strengthening its role within the future group.
According to the plan outlined by Messina, Mediobanca could become a specialized division of the new Intesa Sanpaolo-MPS group, led by Mauro Micillo and integrated with IMI Corporate & Investment Banking, consolidating all corporate and investment banking activities into a single structure.
However, certain aspects regarding the integration plan already underway between MPS and Mediobanca remain to be clarified.
In particular, Messina explained that the fate of the 13.5% stake held by Mediobanca in Assicurazioni Generali must be determined, in light of changes made to the Sienese bank's original project. Nevertheless, MPS confirmed that integration activities with Mediobanca are proceeding as previously announced.
The executive further highlighted the industrial opportunities of the transaction, arguing that the new group would become Italy's leading player in consumer credit and would further bolster its corporate and investment banking and wealth management operations.
Regarding employment, Messina referred to the plan already announced by Intesa Sanpaolo, which envisions 5,000 voluntary departures through the redundancy fund and the hiring of 13,000 young professionals over three years, describing it as the most extensive recruitment program ever undertaken by the group.
The transaction would also create a wealth management platform with approximately EUR2,000 billion in assets under management and further growth prospects. Mediobanca closed the 2024-2025 financial year with revenues of EUR3.7 billion and a net profit of EUR1.3 billion.
