Meta acquires Moltbook, a social network of artificial intelligence agents
Meta Platforms has announced its acquisition of Moltbook, an experimental platform where artificial intelligence agents interact with one another, to strengthen its research capabilities in autonomous agents. As part of the deal, the start-up's co-founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, will join Meta Superintelligence Labs, the AI research unit led by Alexander Wang. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Launched in late January, Moltbook operates as a Reddit-like social network where AI-powered bots swap code and discuss their interactions with human users. The platform quickly became a testbed for observing the behavior of autonomous agents and sparked debate about progress towards more advanced artificial intelligence.
The project comes amid intensifying competition amongst major tech companies to attract talent and develop AI agents capable of carrying out complex tasks. The platform had also raised security concerns after the discovery of a flaw that exposed user data, which has since been fixed following a report by cybersecurity firm Wiz.
