WASHINGTON-Senate Democrats publicly laid out their demands for an overhaul of immigration enforcement-including mandating the use of body cameras and ending roving patrols-days ahead of a deadline to pass a $1.3 trillion package of spending bills that would avert a partial government shutdown.
Democrats say they are willing to provide the votes needed to pass five of the six bills included in the package, thereby funding most of the federal government, but only if Republicans agree to rework the one funding the Department of Homeland Security and enshrine the new restrictions into law. While some Republicans have expressed interest in new guardrails for immigration agents and breaking off the DHS bill, GOP leaders warn it would be hard to pass any changes quickly.
