Opening of U.S.-Canada Bridge Delayed Due to Trade Tensions

OTTAWA--The opening of a new bridge connecting Canada with Detroit that emerged as a source of crossborder trade tension has been delayed as Washington and Ottawa work to resolve outstanding issues, says the authority in charge of managing the 1.5-mile corridor.

News of the delay marks a turnaround following remarks early this week from Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said the Gordie Howe International Bridge was set to open to traffic in the coming days. Local media reports in Detroit indicated that a ribbon-cutting ceremony was set for Friday. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority had repeatedly said the bridge would open this spring, which ends June 21. That timeline no longer stands based on a statement issued Thursday by the authority.

"As we work toward an opening date, we are taking a collaborative approach, reflecting our shared ambition for this trade corridor. Canada and the United States have agreed to delay the opening of the bridge, taking the necessary time to resolve any outstanding issues," the authority said.
