The initiative aims to explore how new AI-RAN capabilities can enhance network performance and energy efficiency while enabling new services for the French telecom operator's customers.

Under this framework, Nokia and Orange will jointly identify, design, and evaluate new AI-RAN capabilities. The collaboration seeks to explore how a GPU-based radio processor can optimize radio performance through more advanced receivers.

They will also assess how AI can be tightly integrated into the RAN to further boost performance, support new services such as sensing, and bring increased automation and intelligence to RAN environments.

As mobile networks evolve toward 6G, the Finnish network equipment provider and Orange will also co-develop approaches to maximize spectral efficiency for existing and future bands, including the upper 6 GHz band.

"The 6G-ready platform will enable a seamless, software-driven migration to 6G and foster smarter utilization of computing resources across Orange's entire network," the two groups explained.
