OSNABRÜCK (dpa-AFX) - "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" on VW's profit slump and job cuts:
For a long time, Volkswagen represented Germany's prosperity. Now, Volkswagen represents Germany's decline. Things are no longer looking up, but down. The core substance is eroding—not rapidly, but steadily.
Can Volkswagen still turn things around? Perhaps, but to do so, the Wolfsburg-based company would have to return to its former strengths and build competitive cars that once again represent perfection and innovation worldwide. And that is achievable neither with a 35-hour week nor with horrendous salaries for managers who deliver too little.
VW needs doers and a breaking up of the encrusted power structures in which the state and unions do not always act helpfully. But to be honest, that does not sound realistic./yyzz/DP/mis
