Rio Tinto said an employee of a contracting company died following an incident at its Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah.
All surface and underground mining operations at Kennecott, the town where the mine is located, have been suspended.
Chief Executive Simon Trott said Thursday the company is working closely with authorities and contractor partners to support an investigation.
