ESSEN/ABU DHABI (dpa-AFX) - Energy giant RWE is set to negotiate with two state-owned companies from the United Arab Emirates regarding LNG deliveries and stakes in German battery storage projects. According to RWE in Essen, corresponding memorandums of understanding were signed on the sidelines of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's state visit.

With Adnoc (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), RWE aims to explore cooperation on deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Germany and other European markets. "Both companies are discussing a potential delivery volume of up to one million tonnes of LNG annually over a period of up to ten years," the statement said. This would correspond to up to twelve LNG cargoes and as much as 1.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

RWE CEO: LNG Deliveries Bolster Supply Security

RWE CEO Markus Krebber described the partnership with Adnoc as a "strategic collaboration." The plans build on a long-standing relationship. "Through new LNG supply agreements, we are strengthening supply security in Germany and Europe while simultaneously diversifying our global LNG portfolio."

With Masdar, the state company focused on renewable energy, RWE intends to examine joint investments in battery storage projects in Germany. According to RWE, Masdar is considering investing in existing RWE battery projects in Germany with a capacity of up to one gigawatt (GW) by 2030. Additionally, the two companies plan to explore the joint development of new battery storage projects in Germany with a capacity of up to one GW by 2035.

RWE Already Operates Battery Storage with 1.2 Gigawatts of Capacity

Large-scale battery storage systems are used, among other things, to temporarily store surplus electricity from wind and solar plants. This electricity can later be sold—often at a profit—during periods of low sun and wind. RWE already operates battery storage systems in the USA, Europe, and Australia. As of the end of September 2025, total capacity stood at 1.2 gigawatts. The company has a further 2.7 gigawatts under construction.

Krebber also pointed to a long-standing collaboration with Masdar. "Most recently, we were extremely successful together in the latest UK offshore wind auction for the Dogger Bank South projects." Together, the companies are making an important contribution to a secure and sustainable energy future for Europe./tob/DP/jha
