Safran has announced the launch of the European "TAKE OFF" project (Technology and Knowledge for European Open Fan Flight), funded with €100 million by the European Union's Clean Aviation public-private partnership. Coordinated by Safran Aircraft Engines, the consortium brings together 25 partners, including Airbus, Avio Aero, and GKN Aerospace, as well as several universities and research centers.

Specifically, the project aims to prepare for the first in-flight demonstration of an "Open Fan" type engine by the end of the decade. Safran notes that this architecture could ultimately improve the energy efficiency of next-generation engines by 20%, starting from the mid-2030s.

The work will cover all stages, from assembling the demonstrator to its integration on an aircraft, through to the analysis of flight test results. The demonstration is planned to take place on an Airbus A380.

Pierre Cottenceau, Chief Technical Officer and Head of R&T at Safran Aircraft Engines, emphasized that "TAKE OFF embodies the shared ambition of the European Union and the aeronautics industry to build more sustainable aviation." Flight tests are expected by 2029 to validate the technological maturity of this propulsion architecture.

Currently, Safran shares are down 1.5% on the Paris stock exchange.
