Spanish Banks Face Antitrust Probe Over Executives' Mortgage Rate Comments

Spain's antitrust authority said it is probing whether certain public remarks by executives of the country's biggest banks, including Banco Santander and BBVA, breached competition rules.

The National Authority for Markets and Competition, Spain's antitrust watchdog, said Tuesday that it opened a probe that affects Bankinter, Banco Santander, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, Unicaja, CaixaBank and Banco Sabadell.

The banks didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

The probe is looking into remarks about future commercial policies on mortgage interest rates made by some bank executives and whether they might have allowed rival banks to anticipate the future behavior of their competitors, the authority said.
